Crystal Cellphones: Smothered in Swarovski Crystals

July 2008 - The famous crystal chandeliers of the Metropolitan Opera House in New York City are getting a complete makeover this summer? The Swarovski crystal company has donated the funds for the labor as well as 49,000 pieces of Swarovski crystal for the makeover of the famous "sputnik" chandeliers of the Opera House. The cost is over $1 million. (The original chandeliers were a gift to Lincoln Center from the Austrian government.) The chandeliers have now been removed from the building and newly refurbished and sparkling with new brilliance, will rise to the ceiling again for the Met's opening night performance in September 2008.

October 2008 - Olympus teams up with Swarovski to dress up its camera. Olympus’s limited edition Stylus 1040 Crystal digicam to features a diagonal stripe of 98 Swarovski crystals on the sliding lens barrier. The jeweled camera features face-detection autofocus and autoexposure to provide Intelligent Auto mode detecting the five most commonly used scenes and adjusts settings, which is really handy because fashionistas don't generally have time to focus on such details when taking pictures at a party for their myspace page! December 2008 - The Swarovski company is all over NYC for Christmas -- it's a very Swarovski Christmas in Manhattan. For one thing, there is the Swarovski crystal star right on top of the Rockefeller Christmas tree. The tree is unveiled during the first week of December each year right in the middle of the city. Thousands of people watch the ceremony live and hundreds of thousands more watch it on local NYC TV.
Not to be undone -- ever -- are the Radio City Rockettes whose uniforms are bejeweled with even more thousands of pure Swarovski crystals! Ah, but Swarovski does not have one of the city's winter crown jewels -- the famous Times Square New Year's Eve 'Ball' is manufactured by NYC's favorite Irish crystal manufacturer -- Waterford Crystal!

November 2008 - - San Francisco based designer Yves Behar designed a beautiful chandelier using Swarovski crystals. Shown to the left in the peridot color offered by the Austrian crystal company, the chandelier sculpture is called the "Nest".

The 12" Nest weighs 600 pounds and used high tech Flatlites and 7500 crystals and costs $88.000. Originally unveiled at the Salon del Mobile in Milan, Italy. Smaller Nests are also available from Swarovski: A 220-pound version for $13,000 and a Mini Nest that weighs 66 pounds for $5.500. How many do you want?

October 2008 - A one of a kind Swarovski-encrusted Scrabble game board and tiles appeared in October 2008 on ebay as part of a worldwide auction for charity. The crystal-covered Scrabble board was commissioned to celebrate the Diamond Anniversary (60th Anniversary) of the Hasbro board game. Earlier in the month celebrities such as Jimmy Kimmel played a game of Scrabble on the board, which features 30,000 Swarovski crystals.

October 2008 - SkinJam is coming to the United States. SkinJam is a custom made film especially made to cover ordinary electronic gadgets such as cellphones, radios and laptops with a beautiful and durable decorative film. The company is based in Asia and is rolling out its business throughout Asia, the United Arab Emerites, South America and North America. The company claims the thin films will last up to 5 years and removes easily without damage to the device. A wide range of designs are available including some crystallized cellphone skins that feature Swarovski crystals.
